We have in this issue a HUGE Namco 40th anniversary retrospective. Lots of humble beginnings, and a “Where we’re at/the future”-style topics, that are themselves now ancient history.
I really enjoyed a bit on page 7 where they discuss “Hey here’s our overseas arcade, and there’s a Cyberstation and Aladdin’s castle, which is how I know Namco arcades as, personally.
A nice retrospective on Tinkle Pit takes over a spread, as well as an awesome deep dive of NebulasRay, which is not only a fantastic game, it’s the second game produced by the F/A team (thanks Nours, for this info.)
We have a wacky Godzilla feature, a trip to Wakayama and Toyama for Namco game centers there, and in the Elemecha Flash zone, we dive into Shoot Away II (which appears to be an FMV game?) Sweet Factory, and Shark Panic. There’s a bit of coverage of a Formula One racing event that Namco has apparently sponsored, at least in some part, and they throw in some Final Lap R information also.
Over on the Namcot side, we have YuYu Hakusho 2 for SNES, as well as Prime Goal 2.
Over in the Italian Tomato world, we have outlined for us how to make a spaghetti dish with asparagus, tomatoes, garlic, bacon and fried onions (delicious!)
Some wild photos of old-school Namco arcade times in this one, so check it out!
Editor’s note: This issue smelled so badly of cigarette smoke that I had to wash my hands after, and it has smelled up my scanning office, as well as my scanner. Though, cigarette grime is temporary, scans are forever.

In this issue, there’s an extensive feature on something (page 3). Please get in touch on twitter @namcostyle if you know!
There’s also what I consider the shining inclusion in this issue, which I believe is the largest Cyber Cycles feature I’ve seen to date. I’m still bummed that game never got a home release. It’s pretty limited, but it could have appeared on an arcade compilation for sure.
We visit the city of Kuwana, and experience the raw, pure aesthetic of their game centres. They were likely ordinary for the time, but would be candidates for vaporwave artwork in today’s modern times.
There’s fantastic coverage here of the PlayStation ports of both Tekken 1 and Ace Combat (Air Combat). Given that this issue covers exclusively the home versions of these games, four months before the PlayStation launched in the United States, is a bit of a watershed moment here.

In this issue, the main focus seems to be a “snow festival”, which appears to be a general snow gear convention. The really interesting thing though to me, is that I always thought of Alpine Racer, and more accurately their skiers having a certain clothing style that was exclusive to the game. As in, Namco developers just picked “skier clothes”, and called it a day.
However, this snow festival shows that this is precisely how skiers dressed at the time!
There’s also a couple pages on Rave Racer, which is a really good game! It’s too bad it never got a real home release. There was some of its DNA that made its way home via Rage Racer for PlayStation, as well as some of the soundtrack coming out later in other Ridge Racer games, but this remains a special game if you have a means to play it.
Also, did you know Namco published games for Windows 95? There’s The Psychotron and Quantum Gate I, both of which seems like haggard FMV titles, and both have been preserved in Redump and viewable on YouTube. Care to have a try?
